Our National Fossil Day Livestream will be on Facebook and IRitem at 8 PM ET on October 14th. Here's the link to the IRitem livestream: iritem.info/cd/fy-lm-h-y/nrpniL2Wv5imoYk.html
While clubs are practically synonymous with ankylosaurs, we’ve only started to get to the bottom of how they worked and how this unusual anatomy developed in the first place.
Thanks to Victoria Arbour for providing a number of images for this episode! pseudoplocephalus.com/

Of course, any stegosaurus can tell you that a club is nowhere near as cool as a thagomizer, but you don't have to ask Gary Larsen to get one. (I just typed thagomizer without being jumped on by Spellcheck. Science makes progress.)

I still laugh at that the Spikes on stegosauruses are called "Thagomizer" because Farside's creator drew a comic with a joke that they were named after a guy named "Thag" who was killed by one of these. When a Paliontolohist looked up what the actual scientific name for the clubs was, he found that there was no official name. It has since been adopted as an unofficial term.

Okay that is easy... Ankylosaurus loved apples. But he was sick of eating the rotten ones that fell to the ground and he couldn't reach the fresh ones. So he he grew a club which he used to hit the tree so the fresh apples fell off. 🤓
Shammoria
Shammoria پیش 25 روز
It would make evolutionary sense that you would have to have a handle that could hold the club, if the club was first you would have to explain how the dino carried the club's weight and why it traded the muscular tale for the skeletal handle, it would also be inefficient to use muscles to hold it up without a semi-rigid handle that you could use as a level controlled by tendons.

Why you should not mess with this dinosaur (or prey on it)... Simple: It is the most armored dinosaur (and its clan) 1. Its scutes serve as primary protection against predators for its slow-moving nature. A very time-consuming process overall to kill this dinosaur, not even worth preying on. 2. Its cervical neck rings would be time-consuming processes to bite through its neck. It is better to turn it upside-down. 3. Its squamosal horns are not for nothing, it could break the teeth of anyone who dares to put their damn mouth near its head. Just a simple swing of its head. 4. Its head is also thick, large, and heavy because of the scutes that are fused on it that can be also used to head-butt predators. 5. Lastly, its iconic feature, the tail club. I do not even have to describe what it is like. One word: Tank

Call me crazy, but I believe that a FEW species of non-avian dinosaurs weathered the impact, and survived for a few more million years. After all, our knowledge regarding dinos is constantly expanding, and personally I find the idea intriguing.

If the tail was that strong and it's an herbivore, aside from self-defense(and sex) it seems to me the next most likely possible use of its tail would have been food. It could have knocked down tall vegetation in order to access different kinds of food, crack open nuts or bark(if they existed), or perhaps even just smash things to make them easier to digest, or more. I was kind of surprised you didn't mention this with the other things you did mention, not sure if there's some reason this isn't likely. Maybe its size and weight would have allowed it to do most of these things anyway. It's really a wonder why tail spikes/clubs aren't more prevalent than they are in the animal kingdom, though.

In my headcanon is that when it feel threatened, it will raise it's tail and lower it's head so that the predator think the tail is the head. Then when the predator try to attack the tail, it whack them in the head and possibly breaking the predator's jaw.

I wonder how old dinosaurs got, never really thought about it much until the mention that these clubs may not form until adulthood, which started my brain down the path. I mean on one hand in general dinosaurs (and other things that look like dinosaurs) were quite large, so maybe they lived for several decades, but on the other hand large doesnt inherently mean old, less complex animals are capable of reaching a pretty reasonable size in just a few years especially less complex brains. Giant squid only live about 5 years.
