Figuring out what this creature’s face actually looked like would take paleontologists years. But understanding this weird animal can help us shine a light on at least one way for ecosystems to bounce back from even the worst mass extinction.
Thanks to Ceri Thomas (nixillustration.com) for the many excellent Triassic reptile illustrations (both Atopodentatus and Henodus) featured in this episode!
And thanks to Xiao-Chun Wu, Nick Fraser, and Shixue Hu for providing photos for this video!
Finally, thanks to Joschua Knüppe (www.deviantart.com/hyrotrioskjan) (the thumbnail illustration!), Julio Lacerda ( JulioTheArtist), Jaime Headden (www.deviantart.com/qilong), and Dmitry Bogdanov for their wonderful paleoart as well.
Both Atopodentatus papers discussed in this video:
Cheng, L., Chen, X., Shang, Q. et al. 2014. A new marine reptile from the Triassic of China, with a highly specialized feeding adaptation. Naturwissenschaften 101, 251-259 DO1: 10.1007/s00114-014-1148-4
Chun, L., Rieppel, O., Long, C. & Fraser, N.C. 2016. The earliest herbivorous marine reptile and its remarkable jaw apparatus. Science Advances 2(5): e1501659 DOI: 10.1126/sciadv.1501659
And on the paper on the Luoping biota:
Hu, S., Zhang, Q., Chen, Z.Q., Zhou, C., Lu, T. Xie, T., Wen, W., Huang, J. & Benton, M.J. 2010. The Luoping biota: exceptional preservation, and new evidence on the Triassic recovery from end-Permian mass extinction. Proceedings of the Royal Society B 278: 2274-2282 doi.org/10.1098/rspb.2010.2235

Interesting question -- what animals have gone from meat eating to plant eating, or vice-versa? Are omnivores actually species caught in the process of going from one to the other??? Humans are descended from herbivorous primates. Will we evolve into carnivores?? Pandas evolved from carnivores, I think. Bears are omnivores, but Polar Bears are totally carnivorous. Which was are bears evolving? It does seem to be unusual to change basic eating strategy.

Maybe that’s where herbivore came from, a post extinction world where prey was becoming rare and plants may have bounced back quicker than animals meaning plants were just the most available food source.

So many of the old "western world" dinosaurs have been reclassified, due to incomplete specimens being misinterpreted. The same thing is now happening with the more recent discoveries from China. You can't accurately describe a species from a single specimen, or different fragments from several specimens.

You suggest green sea turtles are herbivores, but the brevity of IRitem videos denies the opportunity to also include that they eat fish in the early stages of their life cycles.

"...the Triassic hasn't given up all of it's secrets just yet." Isn't that bit misleading? It suggests not only that it would be possible to learn everything about any past era, but also that palaeontologists are anywhere near knowing "all" of the Triassic's secrets. They certainly are not. We don't even know about all of the creatures living and dying in the Holocene, so it's exceptionally ignorant to assume that we know any significant amount of information about the past. Many creatures who existed in that period of millions of years simply would not have fossilised since the process takes place under very specific conditions. That means that the fossil record has more holes than a sieve. You know it's this kind of misleading throwaway phrase that has people delusional about the advancements of science and it's why people can't believe the more economically developed part of the world is being ravaged by the common cold's bad arse brother, Sars-Cov-2 because think about it, if a scientist can tell you how some dodgy looking reptile lived it's life 250 million years ago, how can a common cold ravage the world? This is why scientists should be more honest and humble. The analysis of this creature is purely speculative and you know next skin to nothing about the Triassic or any other period of the past whether prehistoric or historic.

Maybe the mouth is shaped like that to easy scrap seaweed/kelp like leaves off their stems? It grabs the stem at the base of the plant and swims backwards, draging the leaves in from the back sides of the mouth and catching them in the needles. Like how you'd easily remove rosemary leaves from a stem by pinching the base of the stem and pulling back to the top of it.
