For decades, scientists have been studying the cause of the Younger Dryas, and trying to figure out if something like it could happen again. And it turns out that what caused this event is the subject of a heated debate.
Thanks to these wonderful paleoartists for their excellent illustrations!

Hi all! A quick correction: at 9:17, our temperature conversion graphic mistakenly converts the temperature difference as an absolute temperature. A change of 10°C is equivalent to 18°F. We apologize for the error and a big thanks to VUQuadrophenia for pointing this out to us!

I dislike that the scientific dialog around this even has 'tribalized'. Why couldn't the Younger Dryas Event be all three? It seems to me there is strong evidence for all three, and yet each camp tries to claim it was the sole cause. An asteroid or comet bursts over the Laurentide Ice sheet, causing the ice dams to break, sending the flood waters into the Atlantic and Pacific. The loss of this enormous mass causes the crust to flex, triggering volcanic events like the one in Germany. Bam! Solved. It all ties up so nicely without the unnecessary bravado of each camp.

I had the impression the "Carolina Beys" depressions along the east coast were conclusive evidence the Younger Dryas was caused by a comet or meteor that struck the massive ice sheet covering much of North America. The ejecta from the impact consisted of huge chucks of ice, which, when they landed, caused the Beys formation, most of which are remarkably similar ellipses of all sizes that 'point' to an impact point in the Saginaw Bay area of the Great Lakes. And of course, being chunks of ice, they melted, leaving little or no residue of the impactor.

See you tube posts by Antonio Zamora regarding Carolina Bays and the Younger Dryas Impact Event. There is evidence of an asteroid or comet impact hitting the glacier over what is now Saginaw Bay, north and western South America, Greenland and Europe into Eurasia. The impact upon North America is estimated to have caused North America from the Rockies to the Atlantic to have been cover in a meter of ejected ice within minutes of impact

Some of the newest geologic evidence shows that there were comet fragments that regularly impacted the planet over a 20 year period from the Taurids, which was a massive comet that broke up over time. Along with the actual impact debris (which left a layer of physical evidence), the planet experienced huge continental fires which created enough smoke and ash to obscure the sun for years (this left evidence worldwide in a geological layer). This along with the collapse of a couple ice dams releasing fresh water and volcanology contributed mightily to the Younger Dryas ice age. And the almost immediate (geologically speaking) extinction of the megafauna. So it was multiple causes precipitated by the comets impacts that caused the Younger Dryas. Quite a few geologists and anthropologists/archaeologists have collaborated and put forth papers on all this evidence within the last 4 years. It’s only a matter of time and further evidence that will fully confirm this. And yes, there is a lot of controversy among the various scientific factions, which is slowly being whittled down as mew evidence comes forth every year.

Considering how hard it is to kill a cow. The overhunting hypothesis isn't actually possible. There wasn't that much human population to megafauna extinct. Hunting megafauna, would be a once in a while epic adventure, considering how hard it would be. Otherwise we wouldn't have buffalos, elephants and giraffes in Africa. They'd have provided epic meal sources, but they're very dangerous animals to kill with just a spear. Even for the bravest if hunters. Probably humans preferred medium prey. Like antelopes and deers. Less risk but could still feed an entire clan. Maybe it was just disease that wiped out the megafauna. We're already seeing signs, that it might be the one thing that will cause our extinction, why not theirs?

The majority of the humans diet at the time was meat. Their hunting these animals was proven. Every year we find out that humans arrived earlier. The cold periods occurred before and the megafauna didn't die. The science is obvious on this if you remove the futurist pro-human politics. Humans exacerbated climate change (which was always happening) and it sent these populations over the tipping point. It did it every single place humans arrived. Do better research.
