The evolution of our ability to speak is its own epic saga and it’s worth pausing to appreciate that. It’s taken several million years to get to this moment where we can tell you about how it took several million years for us to get here.

I'm surprised that she did not talk about handedness (favoring right or left hand), as this is detected in how some flints were sharpened or formed. This is also associated with a partial division of labor with the right and left hemisphere of our brain. Language use favors one side of the brain or the other. It is thought by some that the complexities of our language needed t his kind of division of labor. Thus, the detection of handedness may be the existence of complex language.

Parrots and corvids have anatomical machinery to hear and reproduce human speech but we don’t call it language. Bees tell stories about the location and amount of nectar and pollen with their dances, we might call it a language with a very concise vocabulary and grammar. Why are we so obsessed with phonetics?

Very nice episode! Thanks! Although, I believe this topic needs to be also approached from the perspective of the evolution of the brain. Also the process on how language develops on each human being has some interesting stories to tell on why we talk, mostly when compared with the process of proto-linguistic abilities in non human primates. Michael Tomasello's latest book Becoming Human has some interesting insights on this :)

Why would the ability to communicate via language need "human like" sounds, and therefore the ability produce and hear such sounds? Lacking the necessary bones (skeleton structures) to produce and hear sounds like modern humans use to communicate does not mean that the earlier "humans" did not use a "language" to communicate. It just tells that they very likely could not have used a "modern language". But even then, how would you know that the difference in bones could not have been compensated by differences in tissue/muscles/movements to produce similar sounds to the modern ones?

If the bones indicate that a species was capable of forming all modern sounds of human speech, doesn’t that indicate that they were using the modifications in a way that was advantageous to their survival? Otherwise why would they have changed at all from earlier hominids? And what possible advantage could they confer other than speech?

This is a conversation about intelligent communication. It doesn't really matter what form it takes... The basis of intelligent communication is the faculty of reason. Intellect and reason are a faculty flowing from ones nature so from the beginning we had intelligent communication. Whether we used sounds, or signals or drawings or writing is all besides the point. It is not some random unintelligent evolutionary process which gave us the means or desire to communicate. It's a theory that lacks sufficient proof. It requires alot of blind faith.
